Project Zephyr: An Ergo Mouse for Gamers

August 28, 2019

My latest project focuses on two industry misconceptions about computer peripherals. Firstly, the idea that the gaming industry has to re-design the same mouse over and over with feature creep, and flashy lights to entice young consumers when the average age of gamers has risen over the last ten years. Second is to show that existing ergonomic solutions for computer mice is flawed.

Video Game industry quickly became the largest entertainment industry surpassing the movie industry in 2019. Video games have shown a innovative and complex understanding of story telling for all ages to engross themselves in. Gaming peripherals have stagnated in design the last decade; sicking to their RGB lighting and over-designed ergonomic speed forms. The industry’s population has shifted towards an older demographic of 25-50 years of age. Demand for more sophisticated gaming peripherals for the working class adults.

Existing ergonomic solutions provided by competing products are not truly ergonomic because they do not address the problem of repetition being the single most reason for discomfort in the workplace. Repetition is the most common cause for pain inducing conditions such as carpal tunnel. The only way to avoid this is to exercise other muscles in your hand Either by Stretching or utilizing different hand positions.

After researching and discovering these misconceptions I decided there was a niche in the market that could still be filled, as the target of most gaming peripherals were for young gamers between the ages of 12-20. I targeted the next generation; the working adult who plays games after work. So I designed Zephyr to be the mouse that could be used in the workplace and at home environment. Ergonomic options for different uses for the mouse i.e; browsing the web, (not needing mouse precision) or gaming and CAD modeling (mouse precision needed). Giving the user options in which they use their mouse. Activating different muscle groups and therefore diversifying repetitious actions.

Design Competition

Biomimicry is design inspired by nature.

Some say the answers to humanity’s climate change dilemma can be solved if we look to nature for inspiration. Nature is a complex self sufficient ecosystem that has developed for millions of years. The infastructure of human generations has increasingly damaged nature’s ecosystem. Now we must adapt our industrialized world into sustainable solutions. Phalanx facades is a complex multilayered cladding system, when applied to building exteriors greatly reduces building heat absorption. Phalanx requires no electricity, has no moving parts, can be assembled on existing architecture, reduces HVAC use; saving money and reduces a building’s footprint. As team lead for Phalanx facades I immersed myself into this project from inception to building my first business, to presenting for judges for the chance to win $100,000. The whole journey lasted a year and with the help of the Ray C Anderson foundation I was given the oppertunity to learn how to create a business, present infront of a panel, build a budget, and ultimately take one innovative idea and see how far I could take it.

Phalanx is our biomimicry inspired insulation grid meant to be applied to exterior walls of existing buildings. Intended to be used in urban coastal regions like Southern California, this system could drastically reduce interior temperatures of buildings passively without the need for electricity. It requires no electricity, has no moving parts, can be assembled on existing architecture, makes use of otherwise wasted water, and ultimately saves money while it cools.

Ray: A Study of Form

January 07, 2019

While studying and living in Seoul, South Korea I explored and immersed myself into the design, art and architecture. Inspired, I wanted to create a form that is a combination of my favorite parts of design. The unrestricted medium that art gives means you don’t need to worry about building codes, ergonomics, product market, or manufacturability. You can just focus on the design and the viewers can pull their own assumptions about the project that are not grounded in bias because of the products they already know. I studied architecture before industrial design and my favorite architects were bold, and exuberant their designs rejected the idea of less is more, or form follows function. While they are important lessons these do not resinate with the times. Modern design was a reaction to mass manufacturing and the invention of air conditioning meant a decrease in the unique vernacular design. Now architecture is more romanticized and serves more than just function; they are experiences of space. Post modern design is highly ambigious but to me it is a reflection of society. As modernism was a reflection of our industrial complex. Post modernism will be a reflection of our return to nature, either by designing our future infastructure to live like a symbiotic cycle or our degredation and reclaimation by nature itself.
